Bath to Bristol Railway Cycle Path

This is a perfect year round cycle tour for everybody, a very good option for family rides and less confident cyclists as it is a traffic free route.

From Bath Ebike Hire shop you cycle along the river Avon past Bath Spa railway station through a mix of grand Georgian buildings and the legacy of Bath’s victorian industrial heritage. If you’re looking for a coffee stop on the Bath section of the route you can’t go wrong with Mokoko Bakery (serious sourdough baking, coffee and sandwiches) and the old school Basil’s Bakery close to the Locksbrook Inn.

As you pass Basil’s Bakery you enter a very short section of road along Brassmill Lane before you join the converted railway path. Worth noting that during the week, commuter times are busy along the cycle path. From here you’re cruising through the Avon valley with your first stop at Saltford, if you’re looking for a diversion the Jolly Sailor pub down on the river is worth a visit, you also have the Bird in the Hand pub just off the railway path.

Back on the path and on your right you’ll have views of the Cotswolds rising up from the valley and on your left Chew Valley leading up to the Mendips. Whilst riding along you’ll pass over bridges and weirs as you meander towards Bitton station. You may get lucky and meet a steam train on the way to meet you or you can race it back to the station.

Once you arrive at Avon Valley railway station you’ll have plenty to see with vintage trains and the cafe. If you have planned to continue to Bristol along the path, ensure that you picked up additional locks from the shop. Bike theft in Bristol is an unfortunate issue in the city, ensure when you park bikes they are securely locked in bike secure locations.

Heading back to Bath is simple of this out and back route, well worth stopping in at either of the Saltford pubs for refreshments or taking a detour through Bath to see the Royal Crescent and Circus if you haven’t already.
